I initially utilised this math series when I was teaching 9th and 10th graders at San Francisco's George Washington High School, and I've tutored several local students who are currently utilising these texts in class. I should also mention that the terrible CPM precalculus textbook trial at Aragon two years ago inspired me to start blogging, first on Nextdoor.com and subsequently here. The Math Program at CPM
CPM covers math from middle school to high school, stopping at precalculus in the past but now incorporating Calculus AB and BC materials. Individual study is strongly discouraged in favour of group work.
In the classroom, students are usually divided into groups of four and assigned tasks such as "Resource Manager," "Facilitator," "Recorder/Reporter," and "Task Manager" (see the beginning of any CPM textbook for details if you are interested in what these roles entail).
People work in teams in the "real world," according to CPM literature, hence CPM attempts to teach and foster collaborative learning. Many teachers have told me that the CPM math curriculum engages kids more than any other series they have attempted. In class, students actively discuss the content and work on group problems, as opposed to passively listening to lectures, taking notes, and only working actively after school when they do homework alone.
Critique of CPM
After describing how the "Review and Preview" section operates, I must now address its most fundamental flaw. I've noticed a lot of cases where the "Review and Preview" portion provides only a little more homework practise on the lesson recently taught and then "spirals" back to questions from prior sections that are picked at random.
Too frequently, I've instructed students who are just starting to grasp a new idea, only to have their assignments redirect them back to older topics, preventing them from establishing their new knowledge. To assist the pupil, I must then turn to other sources or make up my own issues.
