History of CIPD

Factory inspectors were initially employed in the United Kingdom in 1893. Rowntree's hired Mrs E. M. Wood as its first inspector in 1896 to take care of its female and young workers. In order to explore industrial welfare work, Edward Cadbury of Cadbury Brothers brought together employers in 1909. As a result, 25 employers created an association with Mrs Wood of Rowntree's serving as secretary. During a trade show in 1912 at Olympia in London, the job of "social workers" was brought to the public's attention.

The Welfare Workers' Association (WWA), the organisation that would become the CIPD, was established on June 6, 1913, during an employers' meeting in York. Seebohm Rowntree served as the meeting's chair. Around fifty other companies, including Boots, Cadbury, and Chivers and Sons, were present in addition to Rowntree's. 34 of the employers in attendance agreed that the WWA should be established as...an organisation of employers interested in improving the workplace environment and of welfare workers employed by them.

Chartered status

Since achieving chartered status in 2000, the IPD has been known as the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), and as of July 1 of that year, it reported having 120,000 practitioners as members. The CIPD celebrated its centennial year in June 2013.
